Challenger tragedy - on January 28, 1986, the space shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after take-off from Cape Canaveral, killing six astronauts and its elementary school teacher passenger. The explosion occurred when a seal in the solid rocket booster failed because of uncharacteristically cold temperatures on the morning of the launch.
